Pumpkin Beer Taste Test 2006

Sucking the Fun Out of Drinking, With Science!

The big conclusion I can take away from all of the data is: People's tastes vary. For every beer that impressed one person, another was left wanting.

That said, even people who liked a beer at the tasting found that it wasn't all rainbows and kittens the next time they drank it. Indeed, even the ones that were thought disgusting during the tasting were more than palatteable when tried later on.

But with all of that said, the Saranac Pumpkin Ale was the clear winner in this tasting. It's cheap by pumpkin beer standards (running about $5.99 most places), but came out on top in nearly every category of beer-tastiness.

Likewise, the other bargain-pumpkin-beer, Sea Dog, was the big loser in almost every category. The Sea Dog's failure doesn't seem to stem from being disgusting, but merely un-impressive. Beers with stronger tastes seems to put-off some while engrossing others, but Sea Dog just seemed to disappoint across the board. It's a shame, since the dog on the label is pretty cute.

I hope you get a chance to try some pumpkin beers for yourself, and that the information provided here provides you with an excuse to try a particular one, if only to see which judge your opinion lines up with most.

Thanks to all participants!
